Iron River, WI

We landed in Iron River Wisconsin today (goodbye Michigan; it was a great 31 days, we will return again!) for a supposed week of “slow down”. I have a sneaking suspicion it’ll be nothing of the sort!
We’ve got a superb spot in the campgrounds right on the water of Iron Lake.

Apostle Islands

The stunning Apostle Islands. Weather was beautiful; air temps were in the high 70’s while Lake Superior water temp was 40 degrees!

Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge

Cloudy day made for cool vibes…
* Drummond village, in the Chequamegon National Forest. Nothing but ATV trails and lakes everywhere.
* Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge. Saw several interesting animal beds off the hiking trail. These looked too large for deer, and there are after all bear around, yet we saw neither.
* dense fog rolled in off of Lake Superior for the night (sunset at 9:02 CST). Felt like a movie set driving home to the campground!

70- mile Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway

Day trip around the 70- mile Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway:
Orienta Falls, the Port Wing village and Marina, Cornucopia Beach (home to an artesian well; crystal clear chilled water), and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Pictured Rocks

Rolled into Munising today, right straight into the DENSE fog coming off of a very cloudy Lake Superior.
Arrived just in time to drive around the town and grab a wood-fired pizza along with a Michigan Blueberry Lager and enjoy live music at the must-stop East Channel Brewing Company.

Today we explored the entire length of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore via Lois.
Weather today cleared up a tad from yesterday, although the forecast called for an even brighter outlook than experienced. Winds were strong coming off of Lake Superior, cold fog/rain persisted for the majority of the day. Yet, the 22 mile drive up and back lasting a good 5 hours via H-58 rewarded us with majestic views.
Tomorrow we will see the same stretch of land from the water’s perspective.

Seeing Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore from the water is spectacular!
I’m so happy the weather cleared today and the sun was out. Still, sitting up top on the cruise boat was COLD 🥶❄️💨 We toughed it out though and came prepared with blankets. Who knew in mid-June it could be in the 40s in the Upper Peninsula?
After cruising, we stopped to warm up with a delicious Yooper dish – a pasty (say “past”- eee).

A Heading
While camped in Petoskey, we did a day trip over to Mackinaw City and then a ferry ride over to Mackinac Island. Chilly and cloudy, yet the sun did manage to pop out in the late afternoon, just in time to enjoy the sunset ferry ride back over to the mainland.
Highlights:
A stroll down Main Street, Murdock Fudge (cherry chocolate yum! 🍒), hiked up to Arch Rock via the botanical trail, walked down to admire the gorgeous homes and B&Bs along Huron Street, fueled up with sugar once more with a flight of Moomers Ice Cream 🍨, back on the last 9 PM ferry. Dinner at camp by 10:30 pm – I love these long days.
We will definitely be back to Mackinac Island in the future! 🚲🚲💐🌷🌸

No Cars allowed on the island

Only horse drawn carriages and bicycles are the methods of transportation. Lots of beautiful Bed and Breakfasts are here; guests must load up along with their luggage on one of the ferries. Once on the island, luggage gets placed on horse drawn “taxis”, along with other supplies from the mainland to provision restaurants and lodges.

Arch Rock, and a sunset ferry ride back to the mainland

what a day. We will return!
