Bryce Canyon NP, and
Red Canyon NF

Stayed near Panguitch Utah to see Bryce Canyon. Actually, we were a bit closer to the Park (thankfully) by camping at Red Canyon Village RV Campground on Hwy 12 itself. Shaved off a good 20 minutes. Very close to Red Canyon by just a few miles.

Bryce Canyon National Park
Finding ourselves here at the beginning of September, the crowds had died down somewhat. Shuttle service was offered for the first portion (the Bryce Amphitheater), but we found that the traffic was light enough to take our own car in. Parking spots are very limited, so the Shuttle would definitely be the way to go in the busy season. Bristlecone Pine Loop Trail was enjoyable, located at the end of the 18 mile Park road.  Tip for Sunset: don’t go to the popular Sunset Point overlook, but rather to Fairyland Point. Although we weren’t present at either location for sunset, I can see why someone recommended this tip. We also took the time to see Mossy Cave, which was a short and fun hike – the grotto itself was dry with no waterfall, but the moss still had enough humidity to thrive. There was some water still flowing through the canal (man-made by the Mormans years ago via picks and shovels to divert water 17 miles away in Tropic UT) which had quite a large and fun waterfall.

Red Canyon National Forest.
I enjoyed this area almost more than Bryce Canyon! It was so beautiful, especially during the late afternoon and Golden Hour when the soils/rocks glowed red.  Very very scenic. We devoted one day here and could have easily spent two or three additional days exploring. There is a very nice bike trail starting here that moves westward all the way into Bryce. Lots of pretty shaded National Forest campgrounds located in this canyon too.

Hwy 12 Scenic Byway ride.
This highway was so pretty, and starts at Panguitch (or more accurately, Red Canyon village where we camped) and goes all the way to Torrey Utah, home of Capitol Reef National Park). This highway is not for the faint of heart, and is NOT recommended for big RV’s. We took Lois down the road for a bit beyond Bryce, but in the coming days once hitting the road for Torrey, we had to divert Clark around and take a longer route.

Hwy 143 “Patchwork Parkway National Scenic Byway” scenic ride.
If you have extra time in the area of Panguitch, then don’t miss the chance to drive this highway. Cedar Breaks National Monument was a surprise, and a fantastic treat! High elevation overlooks and cool temps (about 10 degrees cooler in the late afternoon, and I imagine 10 degrees more once the sun goes down).

My birthday was here, and I of course had to indulge my Tutu Fun – twice in one day!.

Kolob Canyon section of the Park; experienced a strong storm approaching. Aborted a hike due to lightning, raced southward back to Springdale just in time to hunker down at the campsite.

City of Auburn (near Tacoma)

Happy Birthday to our son Caleb! It was perfect timing to be in this area at the time. He lives right on the coast of Puget Sound in Tacoma. Finding a campground close to Caleb was extremely challenging for two reasons; the first was a short notice booking, and the second was to accommodate a large rig. Dash Point State Park is literally 5 minutes from his place, but as with the majority of parks, they can only fit smaller rigs. We got lucky with a 7-day slot at the “Game Farm Wilderness Park“, which is a beautiful municipal park in Auburn nestled alongside the Stuck River. Navigating the busy roads of Seattle had my anxiety up a tad, but the actual route to get us there was a fairly smooth sail.

We enjoyed indulging more than usual on dinners out to celebrate with Caleb. “Hops n Drops” was one such fun restaurant, serving cocktails in frozen ice glasses. Next night we continued the fun at “The Rock“, serving super sized bucket drinks and delicious wood fired pizza. Yummy.  Wrapping up this first week included more nom noms and decadent desserts at “The Cheesecake Factory” and “Famous Daves BBQ”.

Mt. Rainier surrounding area

On Saturday, we were lucky to have our very own local tour guide. Caleb chauffeured us on a day trip out to the mountain forests via the Chinook Pass Scenic Byway. Starting with a swing by “Legendary Doughnuts”, we headed off to Enumclaw ( a cute little town full of colorfully painted and blooming yards), to make our way to the Paradise entrance to Mt. Rainier. Unfortunately, the road was closed so we officially didn’t make it into the National Park. However, Mount Rainier’s 14,410 feet of majesty was in full sunshiny view as we cruised the roads around there. At the pass summit, we stopped off for a fun snow-crunching hike right on top of the frozen Lake Tipsoo (pictured above). There were still snow skiers out here, taking advantage of the late snow melt. Caleb then took us out to his fave Jeep playground area on the Little Natches River in the Wenatchee Forest. Picnicked at Whistlin’ Jacks and had yummy Moose Tracks ice cream.

The weather was perfect, sun out and in the 70’s.

Happy 4th of July! Fireworks at Puget Sound

God Bless America! 🇺🇸  We spent a glorious fourth at Caleb’s place right on Puget Sound. His house is straight down a cliff near Dash Point and is an interesting 102-step staircase journey. An idyllic locale for sure, with clear views of the Tacoma port and Mt. Rainier beyond that. One is treated to views of Tacoma proper on the other side of the Sound, with sailboats, motorboats, paddleboarders, and huge barges all sharing this body of water (along with seals and even whales!). It’s a one-of-a-kind place.
Jim and I brought over hotdogs, beer, and a celebratory attitude to cook out on the deck and later watch the fireworks explode along the coastline. Boom, boom, booms!

Snoqualmie Falls

Quoting Wikipedia, “Snoqualmie Falls is a 268-foot waterfall in the northwest United States, located east of Seattle on the Snoqualmie River between Snoqualmie and Fall City, Washington. It is one of Washington’s most popular scenic attractions and is known internationally for its appearance in the cult television series Twin Peaks”. It’s the second most visited natural landmark in Washington after Mount Rainier. It is more than twice as high as Niagara Falls! Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the falls are a site of natural, historic, and cultural convergence
We crossed over the footbridge to the Upper Falls view, There are several very good views all along the gorge rim, and there is a steep 1/2 mile trail to the base of the falls. The trail is absolutely gorgeous, feeling as if we had entered a hobbit world. Hiking back up the trail was no joke, but we took it nice and slow and savored the scenery. At the top is the Salish Lodge and Spa, looks to be a perfect romantic weekend getaway.

First, thank you for your patience if you’ve been checking in and seeing no new posts.  I’m having too much fun swallowing up all hours of the day with so many fun things unrelated to sitting in front of a computer. If you’re a Facebook friend, then you’ve seen much more activity. I find maintaining/updating this site is daunting. I may move to another platform. Not sure yet, but I’ll press on.

So the second week of being in North Myrtle Beach was just as enjoyable. Memorable with lots of highlights:

  • Sister Beth had a Birthday! David made a great Steak and Lobster dinner to celebrate.
  • Mom and GrandJim came up for a few days. We weren’t expecting to see them until November at the end of our first loop around the US. So it was great to see them once more. And such a good thing to have family together in one location. A rarity these days.
  • National Siblings Day!!!!!   I love you my brother David and sister-in-law Beth!
  • Bucket List check-off: a Helicopter ride over the beach. I did a GoPro video recording of the trip.

  • Aerial Drone flying is still ultra-rookie level, however we managed to get it up in the air for some pretty cool shots right over the sand and surf.
