Pictured Rocks

Rolled into Munising today, right straight into the DENSE fog coming off of a very cloudy Lake Superior.
Arrived just in time to drive around the town and grab a wood-fired pizza along with a Michigan Blueberry Lager and enjoy live music at the must-stop East Channel Brewing Company.

Today we explored the entire length of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore via Lois.
Weather today cleared up a tad from yesterday, although the forecast called for an even brighter outlook than experienced. Winds were strong coming off of Lake Superior, cold fog/rain persisted for the majority of the day. Yet, the 22 mile drive up and back lasting a good 5 hours via H-58 rewarded us with majestic views.
Tomorrow we will see the same stretch of land from the water’s perspective.

Seeing Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore from the water is spectacular!
I’m so happy the weather cleared today and the sun was out. Still, sitting up top on the cruise boat was COLD 🥶❄️💨 We toughed it out though and came prepared with blankets. Who knew in mid-June it could be in the 40s in the Upper Peninsula?
After cruising, we stopped to warm up with a delicious Yooper dish – a pasty (say “past”- eee).

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

We’ve made it into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and got our first views of Lake Superior in the aptly named town of Paradise. First stop is staying at the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, a beautiful 50,000 acres stretching over 13 miles. The centerpiece here are waterfalls; the Upper Falls and Lower Falls are known as the “Root Beer Falls” because of the tannins from Cedar, Spruce and Hemlock trees in the swamps (or bogs, fens).
It’ll be rains throughout our stay here, but that actually paints the forest ambiance in a fun and appropriate Moose/Bigfoot kind of way.
A wet ☔️and cold 🥶(50 degrees!) hike is on the agenda today. Excited to hopefully spot some rare wildlife in these woods.

A Heading
While camped in Petoskey, we did a day trip over to Mackinaw City and then a ferry ride over to Mackinac Island. Chilly and cloudy, yet the sun did manage to pop out in the late afternoon, just in time to enjoy the sunset ferry ride back over to the mainland.
Highlights:
A stroll down Main Street, Murdock Fudge (cherry chocolate yum! 🍒), hiked up to Arch Rock via the botanical trail, walked down to admire the gorgeous homes and B&Bs along Huron Street, fueled up with sugar once more with a flight of Moomers Ice Cream 🍨, back on the last 9 PM ferry. Dinner at camp by 10:30 pm – I love these long days.
We will definitely be back to Mackinac Island in the future! 🚲🚲💐🌷🌸

No Cars allowed on the island

Only horse drawn carriages and bicycles are the methods of transportation. Lots of beautiful Bed and Breakfasts are here; guests must load up along with their luggage on one of the ferries. Once on the island, luggage gets placed on horse drawn “taxis”, along with other supplies from the mainland to provision restaurants and lodges.

what a day. We will return!

Petoskey, MI

We landed in Petoskey this afternoon and are staying in a very impressive resort campground, Sun Outdoors RV Resort. Winds have picked up here and the Canadian fire haze was evident, making it a chilly gray day on Little Traverse Bay, but I managed to find a treasured “Petoskey stone” on the shores within minutes; they are six-sided corallites, skeletons of once-living coral polyps.
Can’t wait for more exploration tomorrow!

We toured the town of Petoskey the next day and enjoyed a delicious meal at the historic CityPark Grille, a Hemingway hangout back in the day. The place reminded us of one of our favorite romantic steakhouses in Columbus Georgia (MaBella’s Restaurant).

While in town, we made a full day trip over to Mackinaw City and Macinac Island, but that’ll be it’s own post.

Kayak, Bike and Brew Tour

Traverse City is awesome. What better way to explore the lovely town than a “Kayak, Bike & Brew” Tour!
It was a great day with our guide Max, who was raised here and winters in Vail Colorado, and the aspiring young couple Connor and Katie, who are vacationing before commencing the Navy Pilot School in Pensacola Florida.
We visited four breweries in town, and got there via three different locomotive means (by foot, by bike, and by kayak).
Biked to one of the newest breweries and newest areas of town, the Lake District.
Right Brain Brewery –   try the Blue Magic Lavender Ale and the Naughty Girl Stout Cookies!
Then, biked down to the lake waters and kayaked the river to –
Rare Bird Brewery – appetizers of beer cheese and pretzels were yummy as well as the adult beverages!
Hotel Indigo rooftop – we have a rooftop Hotel Indigo in Columbus Georgia, although this one beats it hands down.
CHEERS! 🍻🍻🍻🍻.
