Girl time with Lydia

     While Jim took care of a few errands in our old stomping grounds of Tallahassee, I flew up to New Jersey to visit daughter Lydia. We had so much fun! It was a fantastic 4 day trip, and ended too quick. So much to do, so little time, yet we managed to squeeze in tons of fun. I’m so proud of Lydia and her courage to take on the Big Apple – she’s fitting right in as a city girl. Just a few highlights:
* Bronx Zoo
* The fun Speakeasy “Bathtub Gin” in NYC, hidden behind a cafe storefront.
* Chelsea Market
* Statue of Liberty ferry ride
* Not one, not two, but THREE lucky pennies found, all heads-up!
* 9/11 Memorial
* Times Square, Bryant Park, Salesforce Tower, Grand Central Station

Tallahassee – back in our ol’ stompin’ grounds

     Tallahassee, Florida, the town with so much history for us.

      This stop was essentially a place to rest up, catch up, and prepare for our upcoming trip to the Hulaween Festival. We stayed a week here, which allowed me to fly up to New Jersey and spend some time with my daughter Lydia.
       We managed to swing by our former homes turned rental houses, see a few friends, and visit a few favorite restaurants.

Marianna Caverns

10.15.2022. MARIANNA CAVERNS STATE PARK, FLORIDA
It’s very fitting that the last caves we will likely visit during our Year 1 RV adventure happen to be the caverns where our marriage began.
We stopped in to the office to inquire about “Billy the Tour Guide”, who escorted our Wedding Party. We were delighted to learn that not only was Billy still there, but he now serves as the Park Manager! Disappointingly though, he wasn’t working this weekend, but the office workers that were there today were so excited to see us and hear about our story. They wanted a pic to be able to show Billy and we happily obliged.
We shall be back to the caverns hopefully on January 19, 2023 for our fifteenth wedding anniversary, and will be sure to arrange a reunion!

Visiting Jared in ALA

* Alabama Shrimp Festival and Sandcastle Competition, Gulf Shores
* Jared helped Jim remove the broken microwave.
* Visited the USS Alabama Battleship – amazing technology of the 1940s!
* Jared is such a renaissance man; gunsmither, builder of his own custom Mandalorian Rifle, developing his own Video game and teaching himself C++ to write the code, instructing Navy Seals on weaponry in California.
* Had the chance to visit “Mimma” twice!

A beeline thru Texas to get to Jared in Alabama

We spent very little time getting from New Mexico to Alabama. Not because there’s nothing to see (oh, there’s tons!), but because we have a hard target date to make it back to Florida for the Hulaween Festival. We will certainly travel through this I-10 corridor at a much slower speed to explore at a later date, but until then we made every attempt to crane our neck, take in the sights, and make notes of the areas, towns, and attractions we’d like to revisit.

The highlight of this stretch of our journey was no doubt seeing my Uncle Bubba and family in Dripping Springs Texas. We were treated to a delicious Tex-Mex spread for dinner and wonderful conversation. A lovely evening was had by all, and we will certainly take them up on the offer to visit again; next time, we shall also indulge in the many Texas Hill Country vineyards and enjoy a few German beers in the town of Fredericksburg.

More highlights from the road:
* a 4-hour layover at Buc-Eees in Katy, Tx to wait-out the rush hour traffic we would’ve otherwise be in the midst of in the middle of Houston. The “on pause” moment was well worth it! We had fun sampling many of the delish nom noms they offer, and more importantly, the stress of driving through downtown Houston was dramatically reduced at 7 PM.
* the remoteness of New Mexico/Texas border along Hwy nnn. The oilfield region is so surreal, lots of power lines strung this way and that, seemingly random pipes aflame, pipes/culverts/drills/transformers, and yet very few people buzzing about all that infrastructure.
_  periodic water pump stations open to the public.
 – the company lodging for field employees – especially the RV Parks, featuring row upon row of “A” shaped roofs, that are individually covered RV pole barn sites that were close to full capacity.
* Two boondock nights at Interstate Rest Stops – it’s been a while!
